Vanessa Tyler is an Emmy award winning anchor/reporter with more than two decades of broadcast journalism experience and can be seen nightly on "The CW11 News at Ten" on WPIX-TV. Tyler has been reporting and occasionally filing in as anchor on NewsCloseUp since November 1997.
Tyler has worked in many cities around the country in front of and behind the camera. After graduating from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, she started her career at the ABC affiliate in Salisbury Maryland. From Maryland, Tyler went to WHEC-TV in Rochester, New York, before moving to WSOC-TV in Charlotte, NC. Prior to joining WPIX, Tyler worked at WHIO-TV in Dayton Ohio, where she was 'the most watched' solo weekend anchor as per Nielsen ratings for the CBS affiliate. While in Ohio, Tyler won a CBS award of excellence for her franchise assignment "Kids in Chaos," a year-long examination of youth violence. Tyler's community involvement in Ohio included hosting the annual UNCF and Children's Miracle Network Telethons.
Tyler is the winner of a New York Associated Press Award, and recent winner of an Emmy Award. She has also won a National Association of Black Journalists award, and The Garden State Association of Black Journalists has honored her with two first place awards, one for her reporting on community impact. She was also an Adjunct Professor at Essex County College in New Jersey- passing on the knowledge of the news industry to those interested in pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. And she's the voice on the recorded material for Heightened Independence and Progress, a New Jersey community organization serving the visually and physically handicapped.
Her community involvement continues by sitting on two boards: The Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Essex County - a support organization for citizens with developmental handicaps, and Youth Consultation Service (YCS) a statewide organization that aids children in need and their families.
Tyler was raised in Harlem and her hobbies include golf, hiking, writing. Tyler is also in the process of launching a simultaneous career as an author of children's books.
